The war against terror in Sri Lanka

If you open any daily newspaper in Sri Lanka, You will always be greeted with the news that a few people died the previous day. If the person killed is a high profile charactor like 'Thamil selvam' or 'DM Dassanayake' then more space will be devoted for the news. Otherwise you will see a tiny news item in the corner saying 'Youth shot dead in eastern province' or 'Four villages killed in South'

I am going to start by trying to see what people in Sri Lanka think of this war. Let's start with the views of the Majority Sinhalese. Of course there will be many different views among individuals in any community. The Sinhalese are no exception. But I am going to start with what I think is the most popular view among Sinhalese civilians. If you, the reader, feel this is not how most Sinhalese feel, then please feel free to comment.

Here is my guess of what most Sinhalese think today.

War is bad. Death and destruction is bad.

Peace is good. But peace is not possible with LTTE. Every time successive Sri Lankan governments tried peace, LTTE used it to their advantage.

Only defeating the LTTE will bring and end to all the death and destruction.

But to defeat the LTTE you have to fight a long, hard, fight.

And during the fight many innocent civilians will be killed but the forces. And some Tamils could be arrested on suspicion even though they are innocent. These things can't be avoided any any war.

But when Tamil civilians get affected by governments actions lots of Human rights champions start crying foul. These Human rights guys are mostly from foreign countries but there are many in Sri Lanka too. They keep accusing the government of violating human rights.

But the government can't fight a war without violating anyones human rights. And the HR guys don't offer any alternative solutions to the problem. The government has no other alternative other than fighting to the finish. These HR guys from Sri Lanka and abroad put a lot of pressure on the government. They make it difficult for the government to fight this war effectively. They try to tie the governments hands while the LTTE is free to violate anyone's rights.

When the LTTE is defeated Sri Lanka will be fine. There won't be any problems.

It is possible that Tamils had some problems in the past. But now Tamils have more freedom in Sri Lanka than Sinhalese. They can live in any part of Sri Lanka but the Sinhalese can't even think about visiting some parts in the north and east.

think the vast majority of Sinhalese would agree with the above views. Here is a blog that presents the same argument.
Do you agree with the above views? I would like to hear your views before continuing.
